Sierra Johnson is currently in her second year as the Band and Orchestra Director at Point Loma High School, where she is already making a significant impact on the school's music program. With a strong background in music education and performance, Sierra is dedicated to inspiring her students to achieve excellence and develop a lifelong appreciation for music.

Before joining Point Loma, Sierra served as the Band Director at Eastlake High School, where she achieved remarkable success. Under her leadership, the Eastlake marching band medaled third place at the SCSBOA 3A Marching Band Championships. Sierra also founded a winter percussion program at the Open Class level, which earned third place, and helped the school’s band program grow by 33% in just one year. She redefined leadership roles within the marching band and concert band and led the program to receive superior ratings at multiple festivals.

In addition to her time at Eastlake, Sierra has taught at several other schools, including Lincoln High School, where she worked to rebuild the neglected band program, creating a strong leadership structure and organizing local performances. Prior to this, Sierra worked at Poway High School as a marching technician and student teacher, where she helped rehearse the symphony orchestra and wind ensemble, and created curricula for music theory and history classes.

Sierra’s dedication to music education extends beyond the classroom. She has been the recipient of the Ko Aloha "Mahalo Grant" Teacher Appreciation Award in 2024, and she serves as the head counselor for the San Diego Summer Music Institute, a position she has held since 2022. She also coached flutists around San Diego, notably at Mira Mesa High School, and performs regularly with the San Diego Winds and City Ballet Orchestra.

In addition to her teaching career, Sierra took a three-year hiatus during the pandemic from education to work as the Regional Manager for the Blacktop Restaurant Group, where she honed her leadership skills and gained valuable organizational experience before returning to the classroom in 2023.

Sierra earned a Bachelor of Music in Performance and Education from San Diego State University, graduating Cum Laude in May 2017. She also holds a Single Subject Credential in K-12 Music, which she obtained in 2019. With her strong foundation in both music performance and education, Sierra continues to inspire and lead her students at Point Loma High School, shaping the next generation of musicians.
